Chris Fox 1943 – 2020

It is with great sadness that we inform kendoka and iai-ka of the death of Chris Fox who was an excellent swordsman, student of Roald Knutsen in the Butokukan Dojo in Brighton and Lewes for the best part of forty years.

Chris always strived to teach the Hasegawa Eishin-ryū following as closely as he could the teaching of Kamo Jisaku sensei, Roald Knutsen’s master in Saga-shi, Japan. This fine master died in 1980 but his methods and his important teaching style has thrived to the present day, even though in the last three or so years Chris had to step back through increasing ill health.

Many people will be aware that Chris also had excellent knowledge of Japanese swords and a fine selective collection of spears (yari) including a famous blade dating from the 12th/13th century.

Chris also had a very nice sense of humour and was in so many ways the ideal member of the dojo. His memory will be cherished and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
